Minimally invasive surgery offers several benefits for patients
As leading providers of gynecological surgery in Austin and Central Texas, our experienced and sought-after Austin obgyns are constantly updating their skills to enable them to provide the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art procedures, including minimally invasive surgery.
Minimally invasive surgery offers several benefits over traditional, open surgery.
- Decreased blood loss
- Smaller incisions
- Less scarring
- Less trauma to the body
- Faster recovery
- Decreased hospitalization
Thanks to advances in minimally invasive surgery, traditional surgery and large incisions are almost never necessary.
Methods of minimally invasive surgery
Our Austin obgyns are trained and qualified to perform all methods of minimally invasive surgery and can tailor the approach to address the unique needs of each patient.
Hysteroscopy is performed with a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted device that resembles a telescope. The device is inserted vaginally to transmit a view of the uterus onto a screen for diagnostic purposes. For a procedure such as a biopsy, small instruments can be passed through the hysteroscope.
Laparoscopic surgery is performed using an instrument called a laparoscope, a long, thin device. Our surgeons insert the laparoscope in a small incision(s) through which they can thread a lighted camera and surgical instruments. The camera allows our trained surgeons to view a woman’s abdominal and pelvic organs and structures on a screen before and during surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery that can be performed abdominally or vaginally.
Robotic surgery is also performed with a laparoscope, but instead of the surgeon’s hands directly manipulating the instruments during the procedure, the surgeon’s trained hands precisely manipulate robotic arms which are holding the instruments. Our experienced surgeons are always in control during robotic minimally invasive surgery.
During robotic surgery, our Austin obgyns make the incision(s) and insert the surgical instruments before “docking” the instruments with the robot. Once the instruments are securely docked, our surgeon moves to a console to view the highly defined, 3D picture of the surgical field that is provided by special cameras attached to the instruments. This system allows for greater precision, dexterity and visualization during surgery. It can also reduce the number of incisions to just one.
All of our Austin obgyns are trained and certified da Vinci® robotic surgeons, which maximizes the surgeon’s ability to perform complicated surgeries using minimally invasive surgery instead of traditional techniques.
Minimally invasive surgery can address a variety of problems and conditions
As minimally invasive surgery evolves, the technique is increasingly available for almost every gynecological problem. It is used for both diagnosis and treatment. We’ve listed the most common conditions and issues that our Austin obgyns treat with minimally invasive surgery.
- Ovarian cysts
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Menstrual bleeding problems
- Pelvic pain
Minimally invasive surgery is the most common method our Austin obgyns employ for several procedures.
- Endometrial ablation
- Permanent birth control
- Tubal ligation reversal
Surgery is a serious procedure. Our Austin obgyns devote many hours to training and perfecting their techniques to optimize successful outcomes. For more information about minimally invasive surgery, contact us.
