Adolescent Gynecology

Helping Young Women Learn about Women’s Health Issues

When a girl enters adolescence, she will have many questions about what is happening to her body and the changes that are occurring in her life. Prior to puberty, she probably saw her pediatrician, but as she gets older, a young woman may decide that a gynecologist may be the right doctor to help her deal with health issues such as:

  • Menstrual problems
  • Puberty
  • Preventing pregnancy
  • Social issues
  • Body image

In fact, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends that young women have their first visit with a gynecologist between 13-15 years of age.

Dr. Clarissa Gutierrez, part of our Austin ob/gyn team, has a special interest in adolescent gynecology.

“I love taking care of teenagers because I feel as though we have the most potential as physicians for creating a long lasting, positive impact in their lives. I’m very motivated to educate them about the health issues that can affect them most.”

Putting Teen Girls at Ease

Dr. Gutierrez stresses that the first visit to an ob/gyn doesn’t necessarily involve anything other than a conversation—unless the teen comes in with a particular problem, a pelvic and breast exam may not be necessary.

Our compassionate physicians will work with girls and their parents to determine what they would like to know about women’s health, as well as treating any physical problems they may be experiencing. We want to serve as a resource for young women, before and after they become sexually active.

Psycho-Social Issues Are Always Up for Discussion

Your ob/gyn will make every effort to ensure that adolescent gynecology addresses both physical as well as emotional needs that teenage girls face. Young girls today face a myriad of issues that affect their day-to-day life, including:

  • Body image issues that may result in eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia
  • Anxiety and depression that can affect their school performance
  • Bullying by friends or partners

Preventing Unplanned Pregnancies

Our goal is to educate young women about their reproductive system and to offer sound advice about preventing pregnancy and infections that can affect their health.

When an adolescent girl visits an ob/gyn, we can discuss:

  • Safe sexual activity
  • How to prevent sexually transmitted diseases
  • How to prevent unplanned pregnancy
  • How to keep open communication with parents

If you have a young woman in your life, or if you are a teenager, consider visiting an ob/gyn specializing in adolescent gynecology.  Contact us at the North Austin, Bastrop or Cedar Park offices of Renaissance Women’s Group to make an appointment.
