Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for urinary incontinence, so part of the diet for better bladder health is eating a healthy diet to reach and maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight contributes to urinary incontinence in two ways.
- Pelvic floor issues. Extra pounds, especially around the mid-section, put extra pressure on pelvic floor muscles and can cause them to weaken or cause pelvic floor disorders.
- Diabetes. Being overweight or obese is also a risk factor for developing diabetes, a disease than can damage the critical nerves that control a woman’s bladder.

- Eat a healthy diet daily that consists of vegetables, fruits, lean protein, whole grains and sources of calcium.
- Ensure you are getting at least two and a half hours a week of moderate exercise such as walking, biking or swimming.

- Caffeine found in coffee, certain soft drinks and teas
- Alcoholic drinks
- Carbonated beverages, including sparkling water
- Acidic foods, including citrus fruits and juices and tomato-based products
- Artificial sweeteners
- Spicy food
- Honey and sugar
- DO eat foods that contain fiber and talk to our Austin obgyns about taking a fiber supplement. Chronic constipation is a risk factor for urinary incontinence. Adding fiber to your diet for better bladder health helps with regular bowel movements.
- DO drink enough water to stay properly hydrated. For most people, that’s six to eight 8 oz. glasses of water daily.
- DON’T drink liquids within a few hours of bedtime. Limiting fluids before bedtime will help to reduce or prevent nighttime urination and leakage.
